Title: Using SPM for artefact correction in DTI
Abstract: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used in research and clinical applications, but still suffers from substantial artefacts, which bias quantitative DTI indices or reduce their sensitivity. Here, the different DTI artefacts are shortly introduced; retrospective correction methods and their software implementation are presented. One major part of the DTI artefacts is of instrumental origin and related to the strong diffusion sensitizing gradients (e.g., eddy currents, gradient nonuniformity and miscalibration, as well as vibration of the patient table). The other part is related to subject movement and physiology (e.g. cardiac pulsation). The brief overview over the correction methods will be complemented by a discussion of the implications of the different artefacts and their correction with respect to current and future applications in basic and clinical neuroscience.
