Talk: Marc Niethammer

On June 18, 15 ct., Marc Niethammer, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will give a talk on the "Registration of Image Time Series".

Location: MIC-Arena, Maria-Goeppert-Str, 3, 23562 Lübeck

Title: Registration of Image Time Series

Abstract: Image registration is highly important for medical image analysis. Most registration approaches have focused on aligning image pairs or sets of images while disregarding temporal information. Instead, this talk will focus on recent work on registration of image time-series. In particular, generalizations of linear and spline regression to the space of images in the large displacement diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM) setting will be presented. As the formulation of such approaches is based on concepts of constrained optimization, this talk will also give an introduction to adjoint solution methods for image registration based on simple toy examples. Some ongoing work on fully-discrete versions of LDDMM will also be discussed.

Bio: Marc Niethammer is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science and with the Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC). He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital. His research interests lie in the areas of biomedical image analysis focusing on application-driven algorithm design for segmentation, registration, and shape analysis.
